Paint Girl, I know what you mean about hearing things at night. For a short time, I lived at my family's horse farm that was in a very secluded place. We would often have cars come up the drive, I think just to see what was up there, but it still freaked me out, being there alone. At least you know your neighbors look out for you - I think that's a huge help to have extra eyes!
Melanie, it is scary. I saw several thefts from the Ocala area, one of which was actually a situation where people parked the trailer on I75, cut through the wood fence, and lead the horses onto the trailer right on the highway. That takes some serious gumption! At least you guys have secure fencing and keep your gates locked - it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have a 2nd fenceline. Any extra deterrent helps.

This really is scary. I have had on the top of my list of things to do as putting up a second fence along the road because I constantly see people stopping to pet the horses. However, the other day I saw someone had their family down the street from us out on the side of the road and actually climbed over the first fenceline to be able to get to the horses. Obviously people have little regard for the measures horseowners take to protect them. Maybe I will start closing off the pasture by the road at night. Although, it seemed like those horses were taken in the day anyway.

This is so terrible!! I feel so bad for those people!
One of my worst fears with my horses, is that they will be stolen. Sometimes I will hear a noise at night and think something is going on. I have sensor lights, dogs, and where I live is very private, but you never know what could happen. I have excellent neighbors that look out for our property. Actually such excellent neighbors that one of them called my boyfriends mom about some strange vehicle in our driveway, it was just my dad. I always use to worry about sending my trainer over to get my horses when I wasn't home, thinking another phone call would happen. Which would be a good thing. But I think they just knew her truck and trailer, so they didn't worry about it.
Very heart breaking story. I sure hope they get their horse back.

Yes, it's really scary to think about those poor people and their missing horses. It's actually surprising to me that they recover as many horses as they do - maybe these guys will be some of the lucky ones.

This is a lot of great information. It is too bad that it needs to be addressed. :-(
