Thankful Thursdays – Nostalgia (2000 and On….)
Once again, it’s time for Thankful Thursday! I hope this post inspires you to consider the things in your life that you are grateful for. If you have a blog, consider posting about it there and link back here. If you don’t have a blog, please feel welcome to comment here on what you are grateful for in your own life. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing, then just take a few moments to reflect on all that you have. If you’d like to tag other bloggers that participate, feel free to do that.
For the last week of the Nostalgia series, I wanted to focus on the decade of the new millenium. Just as this decade has brought turmoil and change to our country, so has my life followed the same path of upheaval. When I look at where my life was at the dawn of the new century, I almost don’t recognize that girl. The past nine years have brought me full circle – venturing into unknown territory to discover things about myself I’d only dreamed of, only to return to those things I’ve held so dear for so long. Here we go…

Behavioral observations with captive rhino
In 2003, I took the opportunity to travel to Kenya for a research trip to study black rhino habitat use. This trip was one of th
e most profound things I have ever done. I stepped out of my comfort zone and really challenged myself to try something new and explore my passion. I have always loved science and had gotten a degree in Environmental Studies. This trip was my chance to put that knowledge to use and explore what a career in the field would entail. I got so much more than I bargained for. I am so thankful that the events in my life conspired to allow me this opportunity. For all the travels that I’ve done, this trip stands out as one of the most important points in me discovering who I really am and it set me on the path of furthering my education in the field of science. *All photos courtesy of Daniela Goldman.

Typical scenery with Mt Kenya in the background.

Acacia trees are a common food item for many species in Kenya, including the black rhino.
Although this decade has been filled with turmoil, I have tried to view each situation as a point of growth. Each and every one of those experiences encouraged me to be stronger and to learn something from it. I am thankful that I have found the strength to overcome sadness and grief and still have an open heart to love again. I am thankful that I had the perseverence to succeed when every circumstance was pushing me to fail. I am thankful that I risked love and learned how to be a better person because of it. And I am thankful that I can still reach out and touch all those people that mean so much to me in my life. Who knows what tomorrow brings? But I know that regardless of what it is, I am strong enough, smart enough, and resourceful enough to get through it.
That’s it for my journey down memory lane. I want to thank each and every reader for allowing me to indulge in this series. I’m just so thankful for who I have become and I appreciate the chance to honor those experiences that brought me here. Thanks for coming along!

Michelle, you are like a phoenix! Well done. I have enjoyed your nostalgia series so much.

As always, I am really impressed with you. What a life it’s already been–one that you have actively made happen–full of richness of experience.
I would love it if you came to the TTouch CELLebration to share some of your experience with the animals in Africa. We need more TTouch people there.
Plus, the ulterior motive of wanting to see more of your photos and hear about your trip!

Oh Michelle – you have had some exciting experiences! Kenya – wow! I am sorry to hear that you have had a tough decade, but now you can hopefully put it all behind you and move forward with Tiny and Grady and all the other sweetie pies in your life! Thanks for sharing your TT.

Wow! That sounded like an amazing trip! I am so happy that you got to experience that!

Thank you so much for your kind words and support, Arlene and Jenn! Who knows? Maybe another nostalgia series will pop up again – I’m already thinking of things I wanted to include, but couldn’t in the interest of space.

Wow! What an honor! I’ll have to get in touch with you to learn more, but I am intrigued. Thanks, Kim!

Thanks, Juliette! I choose to look at this decade as a decade of challenge and growth and I’m thankful for everything that I’ve experienced. Right now, I AM enjoying my 4 legged family so much! Thank you so much for visiting!

Hi Paint Girl! Thanks for taking the time to stop by! I know how busy you are these days. Yes, my trip to Kenya was amazing and it was something that changed my life. I am so glad I stepped outside of the box and went!

This was a great TT series. Your Kenya trip seems like the experience of a lifetime that few of us get to experience. Wonderful pictures too.

Thanks GHM, the trip was amazing. I wish everyone could have an experience like that in their lives. I think it would make people a lot more open minded and accepting.

Hi, Michelle –
I’m regretting that I don’t get over here more often. What a great bunch of posts – I chose this one to comment on b/c I’m so intrigued with your African experience and research. My daughter (wants to go to vet school but seems more interested in wild animals and extinction and maintaining natural habitats than doing actual vet practice) would be fascinated.
Thank you for sharing this.

Billie, I’m glad to have you whenever you can make it over here! I have similar interests as your daughter and would be happy to share my experiences with her if she’d like. I’ve done a lot of conservation work, both with African species and with those native to Florida (manatees and bottlenose dolphins). As wonderful as the work is, it’s a rough life and definitely NOT compatible with horses for a number of reasons. Anyway, if she’d like to chat, give her my email address. Hope you enjoyed your retreat!

Oh wow, what an amazing experience!
My youngest (8) is an animal freak and her ideal vacation trip would be to Africa. She asks every year when we are going to go to Africa. I’ve researched a few of the trekking trips and right now, that particular trip is a bit out of our budget. One day, hopefully, she’ll be able to have that experience and those memories.

Yes, Africa is an amazing place, Jenn. It’s such a world apart from where we are in the US. It is expensive though, and a LONG plane ride. But well worth it. Maybe someday you can share that experience with her!
