Walkin’ in a Winter Wonderland

xmas-hay

Ok, I’ll be the first to admit:  this might sound lame.  Winter Wonderland?  But indulge me for a second here.  Christmas is the ONLY time I miss the cold and snowy north and the holidays bring back many memories of playtime in the snow.  There is something to be said about a little icicle magic adding to the ambience of the holiday season.  With that being said, we’re a little lacking in the snow and ice department here, although we did just have a wicked cold front blow through a few days ago.   These newly cold temperatures provided the perfect backdrop for hunting down holiday cheer.  On Saturday night, a group of friends went for a walk in nearby Crane’s Roost Park that was beautifully decorated for the holidays.  The path wound around a large lake lit by festive lights and peppered with families and couples enjoying the fresh, brisk air.  After we were thoroughly frozen (ok, maybe it was only me that was frozen!) we drove to a nearby neighborhood that was brilliantly decorated for the season.  We walked among the homes admiring both the traditional and the more unique decor.  I can honestly say I’ve never seen a Christmas hippo in a tutu before!  Sometimes it’s hard to find the Christmas spirit when you are surrounded by palm trees in balmy 80 degree temperatures.  But surrounded by millions of blinking lights and festive tunes, you can almost pretend it’s a winter wonderland after all.

xmas-collage

As I write about the festivities that surround me, I am reminded of my own little yearly tradition that I started about ten years ago.  Every year around the holidays, I select a charity whose cause resonates with me and I support that charity.  Sometimes I might support financially, sometimes I volunteer.  One year I even adopted my extra special Goober Head.  To me, the holiday season is above all about giving to others so I hope you don’t mind if I share some of my favorite organizations from years past.

Neo Rescue, Inc. ~  This great charity finds homes for unwanted Neos.  Many people don’t realize how many unwanted Neos (and mastiffs in general) there are out there.  These dogs are expensive and messy and huge and can be hard to manage for uneducated owners.  Many of them suffer from numerous health conditions and often require surgeries before they can be adopted.  In this rough economy, rescues like this one are suffering.  This is actually the rescue that I got Grady through six years ago.  They have a lot fewer dogs now, and I imagine the likely reason for that is lack of funds and lack of foster homes.  There is a great shopping boutique on the website, so donaters have the option of purchasing dog related items that provide a referral fee to the rescue.

Pet Rescue by Judy ~ This is a local rescue organization and this woman has worked tirelessly for years to help the animals.  I have witnessed her struggle to continue rescuing animals after city ordinances forced her to disperse her fostered dogs.  Until recently, she has relied solely on foster homes and volunteers to keep her operation running.  She now has a permanent home in central Florida but is relying on donations to keep up her rescue efforts.  This is one charity I really like supporting, because it really helps our local homeless pets.

Stirrups N Strides Therapeutic Riding ~ This organization hits close to home because this is another great local group that not only rehomes retired or unwanted horses, but also provides riding instruction to handicapped riders.  I am intimately familiar with this program, because my sister has been a rider on their show team for many years.  This is another group of people that sacrifice a lot of time and money to help others and could really use monetary donations, used tack and clothing, or volunteers.

I know that many of us (myself included) are struggling financially this year.  Don’t let finances inhibit your charitable nature.  If you can’t afford to donate to your own favorite charity, be creative!  Pick up trash along the road, volunteer at a local animal shelter, help an elderly woman to her car with her groceries.  The important thing is to give freely to someone in need, without expecting anything in return.  This is the best holiday gift you can give!  Enjoy this kick-off to the week of festivities!

Thankful Thursday – Orlando Magic

Once again, it’s time for Thankful Thursday! I hope this post inspires you to consider the things in your life that you are grateful for. If you have a blog, consider posting about it there and link back here. If you don’t have a blog, please feel welcome to comment here on what you are grateful for in your own life. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing, then just take a few moments to reflect on all that you have. If you’d like to tag other bloggers that participate, feel free to do that.

Over and over I find myself singing the praises of living in Central Florida.  I’m starting to feel like I should be earning a commission from the Florida Tourism Board!  But it’s true – I feel incredibly grateful to live in a community with all the benefits of city life that still embraces green spaces and wildlife.  When many people think of the Orlando area, they think “Mouse Town!”  But in my opinion, far too many people are drawn here to visit Disney and fail to experience all the other gems that we have to offer.  Here are some of my favorite things about the place I call home:

Little Big Econ State Park

Little Big Econ State Park

One of my absolute favorite weekend destinations (and one that I’m sure to be visiting frequently during my upcoming holiday vacation days) is the Little Big Econ State Forest.  Despite the funky name, this park is a great place to visit – either on foot, bike, or by horseback.  Grady and I have spent many a day wandering through the numerous wooded trails spotting wildlife.  I even went out once on Tiny, but we got a little lost and I think I scared Emma off of trail riding with me in the real forest for good!  We’ve seen a great deal of wildlife in these woods, including numerous bird species, alligators, snakes, bald eagles, and otters.  We’ve also seen evidence of wild pigs on many occasions.  In some parts of the park, the trail follows along the riverbank and you can sometimes find canoists camping along the banks.  This network of trails is an amazing, meditative place to spend a day exploring the natural world that lies just minutes from the downtown city of Orlando.

Fleet Peeples Dog Park

Fleet Peeples Dog Park

When Grady and I aren’t trekking through the wilderness, you can often find us hanging out at Fleet Peeples Park, easily the BEST dog park I have ever seen.   This 23 acre park is everything a dog could want and more.  The park is entirely fenced and has a large wooded section along one side with trails for walking.  A beach area borders the enormous lake where dogs frolic and splash in the water.  Pavilions with grills, a well appointed bathroom, and plenty of benches and trash cans make owners happy.  There is even a dog wash station where you can remove the sandy evidence of the day’s fun before heading home.  On weekends dogs can easily number more than 50, but generally things are all in good fun.  And the best part is that Fleet Peeples is just down the street from yet another of my favorite Saturday haunts:  the Winter Park Farmer’s Market!

Farmer’s Markets abound in central Florida and we have the option to be quite picky when it comes to the ones we frequent.  There are several wonderful weekend markets nearby, but I particularly like Winter Park’s Farmer’s Market.  Winter Park is a charming little locale and is very dog friendly.   The market is fairly large and offers a wide selection of produce, baked goods, cheeses, plants, crafts, and so much more!  You can often even find ethnic goods like Brazilian ice cream (mmm, the corn flavor is the best!) or British specialties.  My friends and I will often make a day out of going to the farmer’s market – do some shopping, nosh on some tasty treats, and meander over to the nearby Starbucks to finish up our conversations.   Great fun!

Finally, it wouldn’t be a Thankful Thursday if I didn’t make some mention of horses, right?  Since moving to Central Florida 10 years ago, I have become almost nonchalant about the sheer number and quality of horses, tack and feed stores, and trainers that populate this area.  I can recall the days of traveling anywhere between 5 and 12 hours to get to a trainer that could help me prepare for a National level show.  Since moving here, I have been fortunate enough to be selective about who I choose and why.  At one point, I used 4 different trainers – 3 of which were within a twenty minute drive from my barn, and all of which were champions in the style of riding I used them for.  Sometimes, when I actually stop and think about my horse life ten years ago I remember to be thankful that I can swing by one of the tack stores on the way home from work or call a neighbor to borrow an item I might need in an emergency.

All in all, I love it here.  I love the green spaces, the horse and dog friendly atmosphere, and the abundance of entertaining activities to suit any interest or mood.

Thankful Thursday – It’s Never Too Late to Learn Something New

It’s commonly known that Grady has been suffering from allergies for most of the summer.  I did my research and my shopping and cooked up my potions until I found one that worked to prevent the awful Staph infections he has suffered from in the past.  I’ve been feeling quite pleased with myself – we’ve made it through the summer without needing a single visit to the vet, not one steroid or antibiotic.  But there’s been one nagging question:  why does he keep licking?  His skin looked fine – maybe just anxiety from our move and the resulting upheaval in packgrady1 dynamics?  Fleas?  Food allergies?  Nothing seemed to fit and nothing relieved the itching and licking – bad enough, but never quite that bad as to warrant a visit to the vet.  A couple of weeks ago, I started to notice that Grady was becoming a little greaseball.  At first, I blamed myself for slacking off on our weekly bathing ritual.  Then the wheels FINALLY started to roll in my rusty brain.  I recalled back to late last summer, during one of Grady’s numerous vet visits, when he was diagnosed with a yeast infection.  At the time, he had Staph, yeast, hot spots, sores, bald spots – you name it!  I had no idea what a yeast infection on its own looked like.  But it popped into my head and so I started hunting around online for some information on yeast infections in dogs.  It didn’t take long to confirm my suspicions.  I immediately booked Grady in for an exam, where he was prescribed anti-fungal medication to combat the infection.  So why did I choose this for my Thankful Thursday topic of the week?  Mostly because I am so glad that Grady is finally feeling better.  I got my dog back after such a long time that I forgot what I’d been missing (2 days after he started his meds, I came home to find that he’d helped to shred the bag of styrofoam that was ready to go to recycling).  I’m also thankful that I learned something new about Grady’s predisposition to skin afflictions.  Maybe next time I’ll catch it a lot sooner and spare us all the extended suffering.

I’d like to take a few minutes to talk about yeast infections in dogs and what to look for, in case you might be having a similar problem.  Last summer, Grady went to 4 different vets for treatment before yeast was diagnosed.  If you have a dog with allergies, or any type of skin condition, please consider having him checked for a yeast infection.  Yeast often piggybacks on other infections and the use of antibiotics to combat bacterial infections can allow the yeast to take hold.  Once you get the original infection cleared up, the symptoms return rapidly as the yeast proliferates.  So what should you look for?

  • Excessive itching or licking, can be anywhere but often ears, lips, genitals, inner thighs, and between toes are affected
  • Greasy hair and skin
  • Stinky dog smell
  • Discharge from ears
  • Gas/bloating
  • Joint pain

grady-2

It is important to note that there may be no obvious skin lesions present.  Grady’s skin looked healthy and normal, even despite the scratching and licking.  If you notice excessive itchiness, take your dog in for a checkup.  Yeast can be diagnosed quickly and easily and your pooch can be on the mend before you know it.  If you’d like further reading on the topic, check out the following links:  Patterson and Frank article, Brooks article

Where in the World is SlobberDog?

You might be wondering why Grady hasn’t made an appearance around here lately.  G-man has been laying pretty low recently, feeling kind of grumpy and sorry for himself.  I guess the ongoing battle with the allergies is wearing on all of us.  Last Thursday, I took him to the barn with me for some fresh air.  We pulled in, and I let him out of the car as I always do, and I headed into the barn to groom and saddle Tiny.  Little did I know that it was Grady’s naughty alter ego SlobberDog that was along for the ride.  Now Grady is usually no problem at the barn – he sticks close by and spends his time sniffing around and begging for treats from the other boarders.  SlobberDog is a whole different story - you never know what he’s going to be up to!  As I finished saddling Tiny, I realized that I hadn’t heard from Grady in a little while so I went to investigate.   What do you think I found?

Caught in the act!

Caught in the act!

uh-oh

Umm....Are you sure you should be doing that?

You got it!  Grady, up to his armpits in Emma’s trash that he had so carefully removed and spread around the yard (so sorry Emma!!).  The worst part is this was the second time that week that he had done this.  The first time, I blamed the neighborhood dogs because my sweet Grady doesn’t do bad things like this anymore!  Yeah.  Right.  Well, I caught him red-handed.  So what did I do?  I snuck over to him on Tiny (yes, my dog was so immersed in the joys of last night’s dinner that he didn’t even notice the giant horse approaching him!), screamed at him (so sorry neighbors!!), and chased his butt back to the barn where he promptly got tied up.  And I got to clean up trash for the second time in a week.

Fortunately for me, I haven’t seen SlobberDog since, and I’m OK with that.  I was kind of growing fond of the good Grady.  But I’m sure that naughty boy will be back….it’s just a matter of time.

THIS is my sweet dog!

This week started off with Tiny and I meandering through the woods and enjoying our time together.  It has been awhile since we’ve gone on a trail ride and it felt so good to soak up the sun and see some new sights.  The weather was gorgeous and it was nice to have a meditative, peaceful ride.  True to form, Tiny completely disregarded the fact that she hadn’t been off the property in about 6 months and was entering the big scary forest all alone.  She never batted an eye – not at the brand new trash pile (thanks classy neighbors!), not at the buzzing transformers on the power lines, not at the deer that broke through the brush ahead of us on the trail.  Just another reminder of why I am the luckiest girl in the world.  I love that horse.  =)

Another thing that I am extremely grateful for this week is that I have almost completed my supervisory training at work!  I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and this December I will be receiving my certificate (touch wood) for having completed a LOT of training courses over the past 15 months.

Finally, I am grateful for my cousin Jenn’s refresher on Cesar’s tips for walking a lazy butt dog.  While many people have the problem of their dog dragging them down the street, I have the opposite problem and must drag Grady down the street.  Ever drag a 100 lb dog?  It’s not fun.  Now that I have a beautiful, shady walking trail literally right behind my house I am committed to spending more time with Grady out walking, which means we need to fix the dragging problem.  I don’t need to look like Arnie!  Thanks to Jenn’s reminders on how to keep Grady’s energy up, we’ve now had two long walks that have been relatively successful.  Another bonus?  He’s not itching nearly as much.  Yay!  Good sleep for everyone!

The Zoo

I’ve had many requests for more photos and news on the zoo.  I aim to please, so here they are….

grady-montage

Many of you have met Grady before and know what a charming little goober-flinger he is.  Bet you didn’t also know he’s a personal friend of the Easter Bunny (thanks to the Tampa Humane Society for the photo!) and a certified therapy dog!  The photo on the top right is Grady and I at Give Kids the World Village not long after his certification was completed.  Grady LOVES children and this venue gave him a great opportunity to mingle with tons of kids and their families.  It’s a lot of fun and for a great cause.  Every weekend the Village (which is a resort style complex that is a fantasyland for terminally ill children) hosts a street party in the square with dancing, music, and food.  Children sing and dance and forget their troubles for a short while and it’s great fun for everyone involved.  The bottom photo is Grady getting his butt whooped by his sister, Bella Dog.  She doesn’t live with us anymore, but she may turn up now and again around these parts!

milo-montage1

Milo is definitely the more photogenic of my two cats.  I have tons of photos of him in goofy positions or doing strange things.  You never know quite what you’ll find with him.  In fact the photos of him wrapped up in the sheet were just taken this morning as I watched him flopping around in there trying to free himself.  As you can see, Grady was not particularly amused.  The bottom left photo is Milo as a kitten rubbing noses with my old Neo, Otis.  When I got the kittens, Otis was elderly and infirm.  He didn’t get around well and he served as an excellent jungle gym for baby Milo and Bella.  This photo is one of my favorites of the two of them together.

bella-montage1

I had a lot more trouble finding good photos of Bella.  She’s so independent and low-key that she tends to fly under the radar a bit more than the others.  I’m hoping that changes now that we’ve moved.  I have been so pleasantly surprised with how she’s dealt with it – nothing at all how I expected her to!  She’s willingly given up her freedom (they were indoor/outdoor cats prior) and now languishes in her various spots around our tiny little apartment.  Her favorite place is curled up on the cable box or my lap.  I’ll be sure to get more photos of Bella for future Zoo editions.

And now…just in case you’re not yet convinced of my insanity, check out the former zoo in its entirety.  Before the four of us moved in July, we lived with a total of 6 cats, 2 dogs, 1 horse, and an occasional visitor of some variety (whatever creature came to visit via the cat door, or needed rehab for some ailment).  I know it seems crazy to have so many animals in one house (and yes, it felt crazy sometimes!) but I love each and every one of those guys and I miss them dearly.  Check out a somewhat common kitchen view:

This week I want to celebrate the wonderful people that I am so fortunate to have in my life.  As you read this, I’m more than likely on a plane bound for Pittsburgh – my old stomping grounds that I haven’t visited in over 6 years, at least not properly.  As I have planned and prepared for this trip, I have realized how lucky I am to be surrounded by such great people.  So here goes:

hold-hands

Courtesy of leochi, Flickr

  • First I want to thank my parents for helping me make this trip happen!  Without their support and the subsequent kick in the butt, I probably would have continued procrastinating on planning this thing.  So thanks, guys!
  • Thanks to my cousin John and family for giving me a place to stay and some great company!  I’ve missed you guys so much and can’t wait to see you.
  • I don’t think words can express how much I appreciate Nicole, who actually rearranged her own travel schedule so she could take care of Milo and Bella for me.  She definitely gets the selfless hero award!  (And yes, I have huge feelings of guilt about this but she is one stubborn broad when she makes up her mind!)
  • I am also grateful to have Emma to rely on to take the best care of Tiny, as always.  It’s such a comfort to know that I can go away for a few days and trust that she’ll receive the love and care she needs.  In my experience, it’s hard to find people that I trust my horses with, but Emma is first class.  Thanks Emma!
  • And finally, I am so so sooo glad that I found Teena at the University of Doglando.  Thanks to her, I have absolutely not one ounce of guilt at leaving Grady behind while I’m gone.  He will be spending the week going to daycare during the day and will be going home with one of the staff members at night, as part of their unique boarding program.  In fact, my biggest fear is that he won’t want to come home!

I also feel fortunate to still have one of my oldest childhood friends still in my life.  Although we haven’t seen each other in over 6 years, we still keep in touch and I’m optimistically hopeful that we can work out a visit while I’m up there.  Over the past year, and especially the past few months I have increasingly seen how important good friends are.  I am so thankful for all those people who fill that special place in my life.

Evidence that Grady is a complete dork

Here are the top 6 reasons that Grady is…..well, Grady:

1.  He spends an eternity searching for just the right spot of grass to pee on….

Looking for a place to pee; Still looking; STILL looking...

Looking for a place to pee; Still looking; STILL looking...

(15 minutes elapse….)

….then overshoots it by about 2 feet and ends up peeing all over the sidewalk, himself, and whatever else is in his way.

THIS is the spot he chooses?!?!?!

THIS is the spot he chooses?!?!?!

2.  Although he doesn’t bark much, when he does it is frequently directed at inanimate objects, including trees, walls, or trash cans.

3.  He is a firm believer that it is better to walk through something than around it.  He has attempted this with walls, car doors, poles, and me, among other things.  To my knowledge he has not yet succeeded.

4.  Need I say more?

grady-dork

Courtesy of Teena Patel/University of Doglando

5.  He often scratches his ear so violently that he makes himself yelp in pain.  And then continues doing it.

6.  He has the ability to tune everything out around him.  My favorite example?  He was sniffing around the backyard and I was calling for him to come for about five minutes with no response.  I walked out to him, calling his name the whole way, and when I touched his back I swear he jumped a foot in the air.  And I’m pretty sure he even looked in my direction as I was heading toward him.

Sometimes I think I need to give him an IQ test.   Then I think I’m better off not knowing.

UPDATE!!!

I now have a #7 to add to the list as my Wonder Dog amazed even me last night!  Unfortunately, no photos yet although I hope to recreate the scene and add some later…

7.  As we were going for a walk yesterday, Grady had a full on meltdown at the turtle shaped boot cleaner thingy at someone’s front door.  I probably looked like a crazy person laughing hysterically at my 100 + lb dog alternately staring down and running from the inanimate object parked in the breezeway.  Hackles up, he would approach ready for battle only to spook at some imaginary movement on the “turtle’s” part, at which point he would jump a foot in the air and scurry backwards.  Like I said, he’s special……
